According to SITA’s latest research, technology and software are increasingly becoming part of the answer. The company’s 2025 Impact Report highlights how artificial intelligence, digital identity, automation, real-time data and connected systems can help airlines and airports increase capacity by making existing infrastructure work more efficiently.
The scale of the challenge is significant. IATA expects global air travel to approach 10 billion passengers by 2050. SITA argues that the industry cannot depend entirely on new terminals and runways to accommodate this growth. Instead, digital systems can help reduce queues, improve passenger processing, strengthen baggage management and support faster operational decisions. SITA’s research shows that airlines invested around $36 billion in IT during 2025, while airports invested approximately $14.8 billion, demonstrating the increasing importance of technology within aviation strategy.
Artificial intelligence is also becoming an increasingly important part of this transformation. Airlines and airports are using AI for areas such as operations control, passenger flow management, prediction and automation. However, technology alone is not enough. SITA’s research points to data coordination as a major challenge, because AI and digital systems depend on reliable information moving between airlines, airports, governments and other partners. Without connected data, even advanced technology can struggle to deliver its full value.
This shift suggests that the future airport may not simply be a larger airport. It could be a smarter and more connected one, where software helps organisations use existing space, people and infrastructure more effectively.
